Age play vs. age regression vs. DDLG
These three terms get used interchangeably, and they shouldn't be. In short: DDLG is a relationship dynamic, age play is a form of consensual role-play, and age regression is a state of mind — often a solo, non-sexual coping mechanism. They overlap, but a person can be into any one of them without the others. All three involve adults only.
Side by side
| DDLG / CG/l | Age play | Age regression | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A relationship dynamic | A role-play activity | A headspace |
| Requires a partner? | Yes | Usually | No — often solo |
| Always involves a younger role? | No | Yes (or older) | Yes |
| Power exchange? | Yes, central | Sometimes | Not inherently |
| Sexual? | Varies by couple | Varies | Commonly described as non-sexual |
| Primary purpose | Care, structure, connection | Play, fantasy | Relaxation, comfort, coping |
DDLG and CG/l
DDLG (Daddy Dom / little girl) and the wider CG/l (caregiver/little) family are relationship dynamics: an ongoing, negotiated power exchange where one adult takes a caregiving, rule-setting role and the other a cared-for role. The defining element is the caregiving and the authority — not necessarily any age role-play. Some littles barely engage in "younger" play at all; they simply love structure, praise and being looked after.
Full explainer: what is DDLG?
Age play
Age play is consensual role-play in which adults act out roles of different ages — most commonly one partner playing younger. It's an activity: it has a start and an end, like any scene. Age play can happen inside a CG/l dynamic, outside one, or between people with no ongoing dynamic at all.
Age play is still role-play between adults, which is why the community is so firm that it never involves, depicts or references real children.
Age regression
Age regression (often shortened to "regression" or "agere") is slipping into a younger state of mind. Some people regress involuntarily in response to stress or trauma — something therapists recognize — while others choose to regress as a comforting, restorative practice: coloring, cartoons, a favorite stuffie, a nap.
Many people in the SFW age regression community are emphatic that their regression is entirely non-sexual and has nothing to do with kink, and they deserve to have that respected. Many regressors aren't in a CG/l relationship at all, and some have a platonic caregiver — a friend or partner who helps them feel safe while they're small.
If regression feels involuntary or distressing, a therapist is the right person to talk to.
Where they overlap
The overlap is real, which is why people confuse the terms:
- A little in a DDLG dynamic may slip into littlespace, which can feel very similar to age regression.
- A DDLG couple may use age play as one of their activities.
- A regressor might enjoy a platonic caregiver, which resembles CG/l without the power exchange or romance.
A good rule of thumb: ask how someone describes their own experience, and use their words.
Why the difference matters
- Respect. Calling someone's non-sexual coping mechanism a kink is hurtful; assuming a kink couple is "just regressing" misses the point of their dynamic.
- Consent. Partners need to know which of these they're agreeing to. "I'd love to be little with you" can mean very different things.
- Community spaces. SFW regression spaces and adult kink spaces have different norms. Keep adult content out of SFW spaces.
What this means for fiction
ddlgfanfic.com is an adult fiction site about DDLG and CG/l relationships between adult characters. Stories often include littlespace and consensual age play; they must never depict or suggest real minors, and our content policy removes anything framed to make a character read as an actual child. Writers can find tips on keeping characters' adulthood clear in the writing guide, and the Littlespace & age play shelf is where those stories live.
